One of the greatest scholars and teachers of all times, apart from being the first Vice President and the second President of India. Teachers' Day is a special occasion for the pupils to honour their respected teachers for what they taught and what we are today.
On Teacher's day, students across India dress up as their teachers and take lectures in classes that are assigned to the teachers they represent. Sometimes, teachers sit in their classes as students, trying to relive the time when they, themselves, were students.
Now this concept somewhat modified in nature was applied by my mother in law to make my daughter Ira take interest in her studies. She and my father in law became STUDENTS while my daughter became their CHOTTI TEACHER (Small Teacher).
My mother in law fondly called as ‘MA’ was a teacher herself with a great experience of more than 31 years. She has many accolades and awards to her credit, all in respect of her service towards teaching profession. As national award winner for her project on securing 100% pass result in SSC of students living in most impoverished conditions, she always evolved newer and novel concepts in making a child understand the lessons rather than just study them.
My daughter Ira was never too keen to study. She did her homework and other assignments as given by her school teachers, but that was that. Additional study was never part of her routine and was a great worrying factor for all of us. Here is where MA played a significant role and revolutionized Ira’s study pattern.
She applied the theory of teachers’ day where in the students become the teachers. The only alteration here was that the teacher became the student. As me and my wife both are working Ira spends her entire day at my in laws place. Hence after her morning shift school, MA and AJJO (Grandfather) started attending Ira’s classes.
Systematic periods were laid down and all the subjects were given specific timings to be taught. Dictations, orals, mathematic table recitation etc were all the part of the curriculum for Chotti Teachers students.
Class work & Homework books were maintained. Questions were asked by the students which the teacher had to answer logically based on the nature of the lesson.
Student AJJO was the most sincere and loved to refer to dictionary whenever teacher wanted to know the meaning of any word.
Homework was given everyday to her students which the next day was checked. Chotti Teacher also took tests where in she had to check the papers and give marks.
On Teachers’ Day Chotti Teacher was felicitated by her students. The entire activity was dedicatedly played by all involved including me, my wife and Ira's Great Grandmother.

Chotti Teacher has brought out of Ira a sense of responsibility that to teach, she herself has to understand the subjects thoroughly. Thereby she studied her lessons while she taught them. Ira’s leadership qualities were explored and her self confidence increased tremendously. Her judging techniques improved by checking the work of her students. With the increase in her self confidence Ira’s ability to speak on stage or in a crowd also improved. Her initial shyness dwindled and she was more assertive and forthcoming.
Ira enjoyed this activity to the core and the results were tangible from her school reports. Ira started excelling in her academic and co curricular activities in school.
The underlying principle and success of this activity was based upon MA’s ideology of making a student understand the lesson rather than just study.
